Desk Report:

Minister for Industries, Commerce and Textiles and Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadi said that effective tasks have been determined for the overall development of the leather industry in both the short and long term, and that all kinds of support will be provided to implement these tasks, including policy cooperation, from the BSCIC and the Ministry of Industries.

The minister said these things in his speech as the chairman at the 9th meeting of the task force formed to provide recommendations and formulate an action plan for the development of the leather industry at the conference room of the ministry in Motijheel in the capital today (May 17, 2026).

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries Md. Obaidur Rahman, Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce Abdur Rahman Khan, Executive Director of BEPZA Major General Mohammad Moazzem Hossain and other members of the task force were present in the meeting.

Stating that the current government has given enough importance to the leather industry, the minister said, “We will not let a single skin go to waste.” He said, the entire process from animal slaughter to leather marketing will be brought under a disciplined system. This will make it possible to turn the leather sector into one of the biggest sources of income.

He also said that the preservation facilities in the leather industry should be increased so that the skins do not go to waste.

The minister said that in order to transform the leather industry into a profitable sector, it is very important to modernize the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and ensure compliance with international standards. He said that during Eid-ul-Adha, animal skins are sent to various religious institutions including orphanages. For this, training has been arranged for the concerned to properly skin the sacrificial skins, preserve them and ensure a quality environment.

At the request of the BTA representative, the meeting requested the Financial Institutions Department and Bangladesh Bank to take necessary measures to get bank loans on easy terms in the interest of leather traders. The minister also requested Bangladesh Bank to ensure financial assistance to traders in this sector quickly.

He also emphasized ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the tannery industry in Savar and strengthening security measures in the leather industry city.
