Tarique Rahman elected as leader of parliament and prime minister by absolute majority

A parliamentary party meeting was held today (February 17, 2026) at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban under the chairmanship of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman after the oath-taking of the newly elected parliament members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

In the meeting, Tarique Rahman was unanimously elected as the leader of parliament in the context of achieving an absolute majority in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election. At the same time, he has been nominated as the prime minister by the party.
