Political parties need to take responsibility to stop cyberbullying: Zaima Rahman

Staff Correspondent:

Zaima Rahman, daughter of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, has called for political parties to play a more responsible role in ensuring all types of women’s safety, including stopping cyberbullying.

She made the call at a roundtable discussion titled ‘Women in the Struggle for Democracy: Contribution and Future Bangladesh’ at the BIISS Auditorium in the capital on Sunday (February 8).

Zaima Rahman said that it is not enough to have laws to ensure women’s safety, political parties must also take responsibility effectively. She said, “One big thing is that political parties should take more responsibility. In terms of women’s safety, cyberbullying and physical safety, our political parties must take responsibility.”

She also said that political parties need to have their own code of conduct and take a firm stand in implementing it. “We have the law, but without the responsible role of political parties, it is not possible to ensure women’s safety,” she added.

Emphasizing the importance of women’s participation in politics, Zaima Rahman said that it is not possible to fully understand the real problems unless women’s presence is ensured in the policy-making process. She said, “If women are not present in the policy-making process, then the real experiences of half of our society will not be reflected.”

The roundtable discussion organized by Women in Democracy (WIND) was moderated by television presenter Kazi Jasin. The program was addressed by freedom fighter Lutfa Hasin Rosy, ActionAid Bangladesh Country Director Farah Kabir, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court Sara Hossain, Assistant Professor of Jahangirnagar University Dr. Nahrin Islam Khan, and various political, social and labor leaders and students.
