BGB must demonstrate strategy and competence to resolve border issues with neighboring countries: Home Affairs Advisor

Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) has directed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to demonstrate the highest strategy, professionalism and competence to resolve existing border issues with neighboring countries.

The advisor gave this instruction while speaking as the chief guest at the BGB Day-2025 and medal presentation ceremony at the Shahid Shakil Ahmed Hall of the BGB headquarters in Peelkhana in the capital this morning (December 29, 2025).

The advisor said that the country’s interests must be protected 100 percent in resolving border issues. Keeping the national interests upheld, the duties must be performed with utmost honesty and integrity, like vigilant guards of the border.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, BGB is a holder and bearer of a long and glorious tradition. Today’s BGB, as a ‘three-dimensional’ force, is playing a unique role in protecting the country’s borders, helping to maintain law and order, and working for public welfare. The government has continued its all-out efforts for the development of BGB. The advisor said, BGB members should give utmost attention and importance to three issues: discipline, training and welfare. He said, they should always be vigilant and alert, while taking care of the welfare of the subordinate commands/troops.

Addressing the BGB members, the advisor said, no drugs will be allowed to enter through the border. Extra vigilance should be brought in sensitive areas. He said, no domestic goods will be smuggled abroad through the border illegally, eluding the eyes of BGB. He also said that strict legal action should be taken against all the officers/employees who help or assist smugglers and drug traffickers. The advisor said that smugglers should be brought under the law. If necessary, necessary measures should be taken by maintaining close contact with the district administration.

The Home Affairs Advisor said that the BGB has a great responsibility to ensure that the upcoming national elections are free, fair, peaceful, impartial and festive. He directed the BGB to make all-out efforts in this regard. He said that the BGB should take strict precautions so that no criminal or terrorist can escape from Bangladesh through the border. The advisor directed the BGB members to maintain full trust and loyalty to the ‘chain of command’. At the same time, he urged them to perform any responsibility of maintaining internal peace and order in the country along with the sacred responsibility of protecting the border with honesty, dedication and professionalism.

Later, the advisor presented medals to the awardees in recognition of their meritorious work in the BGB. This year, 72 people were awarded various medals, including 12 Border Guard Bangladesh Medal (BGBM), 24 President’s Border Guard Medal (PBGM), 12 Border Guard Bangladesh Medal-Service (BGBMS) and 24 President’s Border Guard Medal-Service (PBGMS).

After the awarding of medals, the advisor attended the reception organized for the titled freedom fighters of the BGB and their families. He presented gifts to the families on behalf of the BGB and assured all-out cooperation to the freedom fighters and their families in the future.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani and BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui were present at the time.
