As part of the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025, a familiarization tour was organized today, Tuesday (24 September 2025), taking tour operators, investors, tourism professionals and media representatives from 30 countries to visit Sri Lanka’s Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF).
During the visit, guests witnessed first-hand the various activities of the elephant conservation center, including elephant care, bathing, and aspects of their daily lives. They expressed their enjoyment of the experience and praised Sri Lanka’s wildlife conservation efforts.
Located in the Kegalle region, the Millennium Elephant Foundation is a charitable organization established in 1999. Spanning about 15 acres, it rescues, treats, rehabilitates and cares for captive or domesticated Asian elephants. The foundation also offers the “Elephant Walk Experience,” volunteer programs, and mahout training, allowing visitors to walk with and bathe elephants as part of a responsible tourism model.
Through this visit, international tourism delegates not only saw elephants up close but also gained direct insight into conservation practices, rehabilitation initiatives and responsible tourism.
According to organizers, such initiatives play a vital role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s image as an eco-friendly tourism destination.
