The Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed “United Students Alliance” has achieved an overwhelming victory in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. Candidates from this panel have won the posts of Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), Assistant General Secretary (AGS), as well as 9 out of 12 secretary posts.
For the VP post, Md. Abu Sadiq Kayem of Shibir was elected with 14,042 votes. His nearest rival, Abidul Islam Khan of the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, secured 5,708 votes.
For the GS post, S.M. Forhad, president of Shibir’s DU unit, won with 10,794 votes. His main opponent, Tanvir Bari Hamim of Chhatra Dal, received 5,283 votes.
For the AGS post, Muha. Mohiuddin Khan won with 11,772 votes, while his nearest rival, Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed of Chhatra Dal, got 5,064 votes.
Voting took place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday across eight centers of the university. Counting was held at the Senate Building afterward. Voter turnout was reported to be between 70 and 80 percent.
Many have described Shibir’s return to DUCSU leadership after more than five decades as a “historic moment.”
Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin officially announced the election results.
Results for Secretary Posts
From the Shibir panel: Fatema Tasnim Juma won Liberation War & Democratic Movements Secretary (10,631 votes); Iqbal Hayder won Science & Technology Secretary (7,833); Khan Jasim won International Secretary (9,706); Asif Abdullah won Student Transport Secretary (9,061); Arman Hossain won Sports Secretary (7,255); Umme Salma won Common Room, Reading Room & Cafeteria Secretary (9,920); Sakhawat Zakaria won Human Rights & Law Secretary (11,747); M.M. Al Minhaj won Health & Environment Secretary (7,038); and Majharul Islam won Career Development Secretary (9,344).
Outside the Shibir panel: Jubair Bin Nechari, an independent, won Social Service Secretary (7,608 votes); Musaddik Ali Ibn Mohammad, an independent, won Literature & Cultural Secretary (7,782 votes); and Sanjida Ahmed Tonbi, an independent, won Research & Publication Secretary (11,708 votes).
Additionally, Shovon Kumar Akanda topped the member list with 8,988 votes, while among female members, Sabikun Nahar Tamanna led with 10,084 votes.
