Desk Report:
Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid has said that 100% of the country’s irrigation pumps will be brought under solar power.
The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at the final round and award distribution ceremony of the 9th Inter-Departmental Debate Competition organized by the Victoria College Debate Council at the college auditorium on Saturday (May 2, 2026) under the chairmanship of Comilla Victoria Government College Principal Professor Md. Abul Basar Bhuiyan.
The minister said that the government will implement a project to bring all the deep and shallow tube wells of the country under solar power. The government will try to complete this work within the next one year. If the irrigation pumps run on solar power, electricity and fuel will be saved. The minister mentioned that this will make the country’s economy more dynamic.
He said that the country’s economy is agriculture-dependent. The government has already distributed farmer cards as part of its election pledge. The purpose of introducing the farmer card is to ensure crop production and fair prices according to demand. Through the farmer card, the entire country’s agriculture will come under the scope of a database. No crop will be produced beyond demand. Farmers will be able to know online what crop can be cultivated on which land and in what quantity. Then there will be no excess crop production. Farmers will not sit on the road without getting the price of their crops, the minister commented.
The minister said to the debaters and students of Victoria College that co-curricular activities make students practical. There is no alternative to logic in practicing democracy. Students will have to work to build a logic-based society.
Earlier, the minister handed over trophies to the debaters who won the debate competition.
