On Wednesday (August 14) afternoon, the businessmen’s conference on the ‘current overall business situation of the country and future actions’ was raised in the ballroom of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. Mahbubur Rahman, former president of FBCCI and president of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC) presided over the program. Former President of FBCCI, Vice Chairman of BNP, Abdul Awal Mintu gave a welcome speech at the meeting.

Abdul Awal Mintu urged businessmen to unite. He also said that trade union leaders should step down if they are unable to resolve members’ problems. He said, ‘Democracy and economy are complementary and supplementary to each other. We will support the interim government. At the same time, there will be a demand to transfer responsibility to the democratic government by carrying out some institutional reforms as soon as possible. Many in the country have acquired huge amounts of wealth without creating wealth. These cannot be stopped without democracy and accountability.

Hundreds of businessmen including current and former leaders of trade organizations and chambers of various product-based sectors were present at the business conference. Former FBCCI President Mir Nasir Hossain, AK Azad and Jasim Uddin were in the audience at the conference; Tapan Chowdhury, Managing Director of Square Pharmaceuticals; Dhaka Chamber president Ashraf Ahmed, former president Rizwan Rahman etc.

Speakers at the conference remembered those killed and injured in the anti-discrimination student movement. It has become a custom for the FBCCI president and vice-president to be decided from the top of the government. As a result, FBCCI has become the business wing of the government. Some in the conference demanded dissolution of the current board of FBCCI. One of them, the former vice-president of FBCCI, Abul Kashem Haider, said, “The nominated post from the federation should be cancelled. No confidence in the current board. Resign immediately.’ Many common members of FBCCI shouted in support during his speech.

Jasim Uddin, former president of FBCCI, said, “We have to be together.” There can be no differences between traders. FBCCI needs to be reformed. It should be made a voice of business people together.

Tapan Chowdhury, Managing Director of Square Pharmaceuticals said, ‘We are going through a transitional period. Our children have shown how to love the country; How to make a change.

BTMA president Shaukat Aziz Russell said, if you are a true representative, you should speak with your chest full. Government officials are given intensive if they can take more tax. Let their salary be increased. Intensive why give. If necessary, I will go to the High Court.

Former president of Dhaka Chamber Sabur Khan said, “Let the documents of the beneficiary tax officials be audited. If any discrepancy is found with the money, it should be submitted to the government treasury.

Former President of FBCCI Ha-Meem Group Managing Director AK Azad requested the business leaders to meet the chief advisor of the interim government and send a message to the international arena, saying that a message should be sent nationally and internationally by meeting him (Dr Yunus) that law and order in our country Well, relations with foreign countries are good, there will be no problem in exports. Law and order needs to be restored. You present it to the advisor on an urgent basis. We will sit and solve the problems of the chambers and associations that are there.

Afzal Hossain, former director of FBCCI, Abdul Hasan, Abdul Waheed, former vice president of FBCCI Habibullah Don, former president of BGMEA Kazi Moniruzzaman etc. also spoke in the meeting. Businessmen representing all sectors of the country and business leaders of regional chambers were present in the meeting.
