Student Union Election Experience Will Be Useful in National Elections: Home Affairs Adviser

The experience of student union elections in universities will be useful in conducting the next national elections in a free, fair, impartial and safe manner, said Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.).

The advisor made these remarks while briefing journalists after a meeting on the overall preparations and law and order situation for the RACSU and CHAKSU elections-2025 at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (September 18, 2025) afternoon.

The advisor said that the RACSU and CHAKSU elections have already been held impartially and peacefully. The RACSU and CHAKSU elections will be held soon. He said that the VCs, proctors and chief election commissioners of Dhaka, Jahangirnagar, Rajshahi and Chittagong Universities were present in today’s meeting. Discussions and experiences were exchanged with them. They are the most highly educated in Bangladesh. And those who will vote in the student parliament elections are also highly educated. He further said, since our national parliament elections will be held in February, we have some experience from these elections. Today’s meeting was held to share how that experience can be applied to the national elections. Moreover, since two student parliament elections have already been held, there was also a discussion on how to resolve the minor mistakes in those two elections.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, we will use the good suggestions received in today’s meeting regarding the elections in the future. The advisor said, among the suggestions received regarding the elections, notable ones are – determining the number of polling stations, determining the process of counting votes, how to use ink, etc. Moreover, discussions were held on taking appropriate measures for the speedy announcement of the election results, ID cards with voters’ photos at polling stations, preparation of a transparent voter list, etc.

The Home Affairs Advisor said, the two organizations have no concerns about the Raksu and Chaksu elections. It is expected that both elections will be held in a fair, safe and peaceful manner. He said that cooperation from all parties is needed to make the elections fair. He requested journalists to observe the elections and sought cooperation from all concerned.
