Diplomatic Desk:
The Embassy of Russia in Dhaka hosted a reception on Sunday (22 February 2026) marking Russian Army Day and Defender of the Fatherland Day. Diplomats, military officials, government representatives, and distinguished guests attended the event. The event was seen as a reflection of the longstanding friendship and continued defense cooperation between Russia and Bangladesh.

Speaking at the reception, Colonel Pavel Ivashinnikov, Military, Air and Naval Attaché of the Russian Embassy, highlighted the historical significance of the day. He noted that the observance originated from the early victories of the Russian Army in 1918–1919, and gained special prominence following the victory over Nazi Germany during World War II and the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union. He emphasized that the day not only honors members of the armed forces but also reminds every citizen of their responsibility to safeguard national sovereignty and security.

Colonel Ivashinnikov stated that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have evolved into a modern, technologically advanced, and battle-experienced force equipped with sophisticated weapon systems, including hypersonic technologies. Amid complex international circumstances, he said, the Russian military continues to play a vital role in ensuring the country’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful development. He also mentioned the courage, professionalism, and determination of Russian troops engaged in ongoing special military operations.
Referring to bilateral military ties, he described Bangladesh as an important and respected partner of Russia in the Asia-Pacific region. He pointed to the recent visit of Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman to Moscow as evidence of deepening dialogue between the two nations. Similarly, the participation of Bangladeshi contingents and observers in the strategic military exercise “Zapad” was described as a meaningful step toward enhancing mutual trust and understanding. He expressed hope that joint training and exchange of experience would further contribute to regional stability in the future.

The Chief Guest at the event, Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Staff) of the Bangladesh Navy, recalled the significant role played by the Soviet Navy in clearing mines at Chattogram Port during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971. He noted that this historic support laid the foundation for enduring friendship and solidarity between the two countries, which has since expanded through high-level visits and military exchanges.

Rear Admiral Musa said Bangladesh attaches great importance to its defense partnership with Russia. In recent years, cooperation has been strengthened through high-level visits, professional exchanges, naval exercises, maintenance exhibitions, and Joint Working Group meetings. Russian naval vessels visited Bangladesh in 2018, 2023, and last year, contributing to greater mutual confidence.
He further highlighted the potential for expanding cooperation through future joint exercises, defense seminars, professional training, and capacity-building programs. Enhanced defense technology collaboration and technology transfer initiatives, he said, could positively impact the national security and operational capabilities of the armed forces of both countries.

The event concluded with a performance by a local orchestra featuring Russian and Bangladeshi military music. Guests enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, which symbolized the friendly and cooperative relations between Russia and Bangladesh.
