Rapists will have no place in Bangladesh – Home Affairs Advisor

Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has said that rapists will have no place in Bangladesh. All those accused in the Magura incident have already been arrested. The government is working to ensure their maximum punishment through legal process. Similarly, if any violence or rape against women occurs anywhere in the country, they will be brought fully under the law. Their maximum punishment will be ensured. The government’s stance against rape in Bangladesh is ‘zero tolerance’.

The advisor said this at a news briefing on law and order at the meeting room of the Ministry of Law at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (March 9, 2025) afternoon.

The advisor said, our position against violence against women and children, including rape, is very clear. I have instructed the law enforcement agencies to take a strict stance against all types of violence against women and children, including rape. He said, instructions have been given to quickly complete the investigation and submit a report to the court after listing all the violence against women so far. The criminals involved in the recent rape incidents will be ensured to be tried and brought under strict punishment. He also said, women will perform their duties at home and outside without fear and without hindrance. In this, those who come to hinder them and commit violence will be brought under the law. There will be no concessions in this regard. In addition to taking legal steps against violence against women and children, social movements and awareness should be created.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, last Friday’s Friday prayers Finally, members of the banned organization Hizb ut Tahrir took out a procession in the Baitul Mukarram area. Later, it was broken up due to police obstruction and some of them were arrested. He said that the government has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy in this regard. No banned organization will be allowed to conduct any political activities in any way. The law enforcement agencies are active in this regard.

The Home Affairs Advisor said that a few days ago, an SI was beaten up by some local drug addicts, miscreants and robbers in Patenga, Chittagong, who were later arrested and brought under the law. He said that any attack on the law enforcement agencies will not be tolerated and will be suppressed with a strong hand. In case of any incident, inform the nearest police station and law enforcement agency members. They will take necessary measures as per the law.

Stating that the government is working to maintain law and order during Ramadan, the advisor said that nearly a hundred checkpoints have been set up at important points in the capital and patrols have been increased in crime-prone areas. Joint forces comprising the army, various police units and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are conducting intensive operations in target areas. He said that the law enforcement agencies are working to prevent extortion and robbery during Ramadan and to ensure the overall safety of buyers and sellers traveling to various shopping malls. He further said that the law enforcement agencies have been instructed to take necessary measures to prevent extortion and robbery on highways in order to make the journey home of the general public safe and smooth during Ramadan and the upcoming Eid.

The advisor also said that video footage of all the crimes that are available will be collected, fact-checked, identified and further action will be taken as per the law.

Advisor on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Asif Nazrul and Advisor on Information and Broadcasting Md. Mahfuz Alam were present during the briefing.
