Prime Minister Tareq Rahman has emphasized the need to gradually reduce imports and boost domestic production of agricultural and food products that can be cultivated within the country.
To this end, he instructed officials at the Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday (September 13, 2026) at the Secretariat to take effective measures to rapidly bring agricultural research, the development of improved crop varieties, modern technology, irrigation facilities, and agricultural mechanization to the farmers.
The Prime Minister stated that import dependency for agricultural and food products that can be produced domestically must be gradually reduced. At the same time, he stressed the need to make agriculture more productive and profitable while ensuring food security for the nation’s people.
During the meeting, the overall situation of the country’s agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture’s ongoing activities, and future plans were presented to the Prime Minister. Discussions were held regarding various aspects of increasing agricultural production, reducing import dependency, and ensuring that farmers have access to modern technology and necessary support.
