Plastic plays important role in export diversification – Trade Advisor

Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin has commented that plastic products can play an important role in our desire to diversify the export potential of products.

He made this comment as the chief guest at the inauguration of the four-day 17th International Plastics, Packaging and Printing Industrial Fair at the Bashundhara International Convention City (ICCB) in Dhaka on Wednesday (February 12, 2025) afternoon.

The Trade Advisor said, we need to set our policies in light of reality. In return, we will eliminate bad plastic and live with good plastic. We must responsibly strive to increase the production and use of good plastic.

He said, our country is going to graduate from LDC in November 2026. As a result, the preferential access (priority benefits) that we get in terms of exports will not be there. The government will not be able to provide any incentives. In this case, we have to increase our competitive capacity to overcome the situation. We have to be competitive in productivity and product production costs. If we do not have the capacity, we will be in great danger, he said.

Sheikh Md. Abdur Rahman, Deputy Project Director of Export Competitiveness for Jobs Project, Akai Lin of Yorkers Trade and Marketing Service Company Limited, and Md. Jasim Uddin, President of SAARC Chambers of Commerce and Industry, spoke as special guests at the program presided over by KM Iqbal Hossain, Senior Vice President of Bangladesh Plastic Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Shamim Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Plastic Manufacturers and Exporters Association, delivered the welcome speech at the program. Later, the trade advisor visited various stalls at the fair.

The fair is being jointly organized by the Bangladesh Plastics Manufacturers and Exporters Association and Hong Kong-based Yorkers Trade and Marketing Services. The International Plastics Fair will feature more than 800 stalls, with more than 390 brands from 18 countries participating. Companies from China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, the United Kingdom and other countries will showcase their products and technologies at the fair. It will be open to visitors from 11 am to 7 pm daily.
