Our commitment to make the country self-reliant: Water Resources Minister

Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie said that making the country self-reliant is the commitment of the current government. To achieve self-reliance, the government has started implementing canal excavation and re-excavation programs. He said that martyred President Ziaur Rahman had the foresight to develop rivers and canals, fisheries and animal husbandry, and agriculture-based areas. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will complete these unfinished works of Zia.

The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a food distribution program among fishermen under the Hilsa Resource Development and Management Project at the Lakshmipur Zilla Parishad premises on Saturday (April 04, 2026). State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku was present as a special guest.

The Water Resources Minister said that the current government is farmer, laborer and fisherman-friendly. The government has increased the allocation for the period of fishing ban in the river than before. The Prime Minister has been delivering the promise made by the people to their doorsteps since the day after taking office.

Annie Chowdhury also said that family cards have been distributed as a pilot to implement the public’s important and long-standing demand; family cards will be distributed across the country in phases. Farmer cards will be distributed on Pahela Boishakh. She assured that the government will do everything in phases for the welfare of the people.

The program, chaired by Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan, was also attended as special guests by MPs Abul Khair Bhuiyan and Shahadat Hossain Selim, Director General of the Fisheries Department Zia Haider Chowdhury, and Administrator of Lakshmipur Zilla Parishad Sahab Uddin Sabu.
