Law and order situation unlikely to deteriorate before elections: Home Affairs Adviser

There is no possibility of law and order situation deteriorating before the elections, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd).

The advisor made this statement while briefing reporters after the meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the conference room of the Home Ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (November 23, 2025) afternoon.

The advisor said that the law and order situation is gradually improving. He said that as the election time approaches, the number of processions and meetings of various parties will increase at that time. He also said that when we took charge, the law and order situation was deteriorating. Our efforts in the last one and a half years have improved the law and order situation.

Requesting everyone to be aware of what to do in case of an earthquake, Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd) said, I do not know whether any country has advance warning about earthquakes. However, many countries have developed some apps through which warning messages are sent 10 seconds before an earthquake occurs. The advisor said that thoughts are being held on whether such an early warning mobile app can be launched in our country as well.

The Home Affairs Advisor said that there is a considerable shortage of open spaces in our country, especially in urban areas. Moreover, buildings are being built by filling up water bodies. We need to pay attention to these issues to prevent earthquakes. He urged all concerned to build buildings in accordance with the building code.

In response to journalists’ questions about the capacity of the fire service during various disasters including earthquakes and fires, the advisor said that the fire service department has shown sufficient capacity in various fire incidents in recent times. However, if there is a major earthquake, it is a different matter. Everyone has to work together. He said, we are working to increase the capacity of the fire service.

Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on the Ministry of Home Affairs Md. Khoda Bakhas Chowdhury, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani and others were present at the briefing.
