Labor Advisor Highlights Government’s Challenges and Achievements at CPD Dialogue

Advisor to the Ministry of Labor and Employment and Shipping, Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain, highlighting the challenges and achievements of the one-year interim government, said, “What happened in Bangladesh in July-August 2024 is unimaginable.”

The way the students and the public gave their lives in one month is indescribable. In one year of the interim government, we have tried to establish a framework so that the elected government can come and work. Development is not just about building metrorails or expressways. Overall development is not possible without working for the backward communities.

The advisor said these things in his speech as the chief guest at the dialogue titled ‘365 Days of the Interim Government’ organized by the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) at the Lakeshore Hotel in Banani on Sunday (August 10, 2025).

The event was chaired by CPD Honorary Fellow Professor Mostafizur Rahman and Labor and Employment Advisor Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain was present as the chief guest.

The Labor Advisor said that the proposal to establish the ‘Department of Employment’ has already been sent to the Cabinet Division by the Ministry of Labor and Employment. In addition, the government has taken various steps to pay the workers’ dues and Interpol Red Notices have been issued against absconding employers.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur said, ‘Our two main challenges were to stabilize the macro economy and reform the financial sector. It is not possible to complete the reforms in one year, but we have started them in every area.’

The Governor said that after taking charge, he had a meeting with international financial institutions so that the loan facility would be maintained.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that if BNP comes to power by the people’s vote, 5 percent of the GDP will be spent on the health sector and 5 percent on the education sector. In addition, 10 million jobs will be created in the first 18 months.

The dialogue was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the National University, leaders of BTMEA and BGMEA, the Chairman of the Labor Reform Commission and representatives of various political parties, among others.
