Interest in preserving leather will increase further next year: Commerce Advisor

Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin said that those who preserved leather this year got good prices later. Due to which a clear difference has been created between those who did not preserve leather this time and those who did. As a result, I think that if the government cooperates in preserving leather next year as well as this time, people will participate a lot more.

The advisor said these things at the third meeting of the Committee to Ensure Proper Management of Sacrifice-Related Matters in the meeting room of the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday (August 6, 2025).

The meeting was presided over by the Commerce Advisor. Also present at the meeting were Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar and Industries Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan. Besides, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Industries Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Livestock Dr. Md. Abu Sufian and others participated in the meeting.

The meeting was informed that a huge amount of raw hides were collected in the domestic market on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha last year. This year, 91 lakh 36 thousand 734 animals were sacrificed. Of this, 60 lakh 45 thousand 220 hides were preserved by madrasas, orphanages, Lillah boarding houses and local tanners.

Of this, 17 lakh 61 thousand 51 hides were preserved in madrasas, orphanages and Lillah boarding houses. The highest number of hides was preserved in Chittagong division, 15 lakh 48 thousand pieces. Then 14 lakh 9 thousand were preserved in Dhaka, and 13 lakh 90 thousand hides were preserved in Rajshahi.

Meanwhile, some challenges in the management of sacrificial skins this year were highlighted in the meeting. They are, management of sacrificial animal markets; removal of unauthorized markets and recovery rate of sold animals; ensuring fair price of hides at the sacrificial animal and small business level; absence of specific places/infrastructure for area-based animal sacrifice; Lack of proper knowledge of stakeholders involved in leather preservation; proper management of sacrificial waste; capacity and compliance issues of existing tanneries; no existing policy on collection and preservation of sacrificial leather and lack of permanent infrastructure for preservation of raw leather in Dhaka, Chittagong and relevant important districts.

In the meeting, the committee made some recommendations for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha to address these challenges. They are:

a) The Local Government Department can formulate a sacrificial animal market management policy for efficient management of sacrificial animal markets;

b) A STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE (SOP) can be formulated for sacrificial waste management and instructions can be given to all city corporations, municipalities and other local government institutions to follow it;

c) Institutional capacity needs to be built in the collection, preservation, transportation and overall management of sacrificial animal skins;

d) The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock may be requested to take necessary measures to control lumpy skin disease and any other diseases of cattle;

6) A database of permanent and seasonal leather traders and animal slaughterers (butchers) may be created according to the district and necessary training arrangements may be made for them;

f) CETPs/ETPs should be developed to be suitable for processing the large amount of leather produced during Qorbani.

g) A place may be allocated for leather storage near Dhaka and necessary infrastructure may be created as per the needs of leather preservers/traders.
