Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has sought UNESCO’s assistance in formulating an effective roadmap to meet the challenges of the new era and expressed his interest in utilizing the organization’s knowledge and expertise in this regard.
The minister expressed this interest when UNESCO’s Representative in Bangladesh Dr. Susan Bhai met the minister at his office in the ministry in Dhaka on Wednesday (April 22, 2026). State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury and Secretary Mahbuba Farzana were present at the time.
The minister said that there is a huge opportunity for the government to work jointly with UNESCO in various areas of the media sector.
During the meeting, the UNESCO representative informed the minister about the organization’s ongoing activities in Bangladesh, especially media development, media-related policies, and UNESCO’s initiatives to prevent misinformation and disinformation.
He said that UNESCO is currently working to strengthen fact-checking activities to prevent the spread of misinformation. For this purpose, training programs are also being conducted for students of various universities in the country.
The Minister emphasized the importance of training in preventing the spread of misinformation and fact-checking and sought UNESCO’s cooperation in this regard.
The UNESCO representative assured overall cooperation in this regard.
