Govt has decides decided to declare August 5 as a public holiday

A decision has been taken to declare August 5 as a public holiday to mark the Students’ and People’s Uprising Day. The day will be officially celebrated every year in the future.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the Advisory Council at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka today, Thursday (June 19, 2025). It was presided over by Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

After the meeting, Cultural Affairs Advisor Mustafa Sarwar Farooqui said at a press conference organized at the Foreign Service Academy, “A preliminary decision has been taken today to observe August 5 as the Students’ and People’s Uprising Day. It will be passed in the cabinet meeting next Sunday and published in the gazette on Monday.”

He said that August 5 is going to be a national day. Therefore, the day will be celebrated every year in the future as the Students’ and People’s Uprising Day.

The Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was present at the press conference.
