Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that to fulfill public expectations, government officials and employees must perform their duties with patriotism, honesty and professionalism, free from political bias. He said that the civil service is the main driving force of the state. Public administration must be transformed into a real service to the people by coming out of the trend of administrative politicization of the past 17 years. The people have high expectations from the current government and to fulfill them, transparency and accountability must be ensured at every level of administration.
The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a four-day workshop titled “Efficient, People-Friendly and Accountable Public Administration: Strategy for Implementing the Government’s Commitment” organized by the BCS Administration Academy on the occasion of ‘National Public Service Day-2026’ at the BCS Administration Academy auditorium in Shahbagh in the capital on Sunday (July 19, 2026) morning.
The event was chaired by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Md. Ehsanul Haque and BCS Administration Academy Rector (Secretary) Mohammad Altaf-ul-Alam spoke as a special guest. The keynote speaker was Additional Secretary (CPT) of the Ministry of Public Administration Mohammad Monirul Islam.
The minister said that there is no logic in formulating programs just for formal workshops or to attract the attention of high-level people, unless it is for the real welfare of the people. Addressing the civil service officials, he said, “You are the most privileged section of this society. Therefore, you should dedicate yourself to public service as servants of the people instead of considering yourself as rulers.”
Stressing on the need for radical reform of the statistical system for the sake of formulating correct policies in the country, Salahuddin Ahmed said that during the previous regime, all the statistics of the country were destroyed for political purposes. Census, agricultural production or per capita income (per capita income) – wrong information was presented everywhere. He said that Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) needs to be transformed into the most important ministry or organization for formulating the right policy.
Mentioning that agriculture and remittance sectors should be given top priority to strengthen the country’s economic base, the minister said that Bangladesh still relies on agriculture and farmers. Therefore, we need to develop ‘agro-industry’ or agro-based industries based on agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors. Besides, vocational training or technical education should be given importance to convert the country’s large population into skilled manpower. At the same time, the government is also considering reactivating the Family Planning Department to control the country’s increasing birth rate.
The Home Minister said that policies are mainly formulated at the highest levels of the government and in the light of political mandate. The job of the bureaucracy is to determine programs, formulate projects and implement the projects smoothly through the supervision of IMED in the light of that policy. He told the officials, “No activities can be carried out outside the rules. Your main responsibility is to implement the election manifesto and 31-point pledge of the elected government, on which the people have given a mandate, in accordance with the rules.”
