The government is considering providing some facilities and improving training quality and number of volunteers of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, said Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd). An action plan will be formulated for this purpose, he also said.
The advisor said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a program organized by the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department to celebrate ‘International Volunteers Day’ at the Fire Service and Civil Defense Training Ground in Purbachal, Dhaka, on Friday (December 05, 2025) morning.
Among others, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on Home Affairs, Md. Khoda Bakhas Chowdhury and Director General of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, ndc, were present.
The advisor said that the trained volunteers of the Fire Service and Civil Defense have been able to emerge as friends of the people through selfless service. Volunteers have also participated in firefighting and rescue work shoulder to shoulder with firefighters in major accidents in the country, including recent earthquakes and fire accidents. He sincerely appreciated the volunteers for participating in voluntary activities selflessly and voluntarily without taking any benefits. He commented that they will get the reward for this work not only in this life but also in the hereafter.
Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that the Fire Service and Civil Defense is working to create 62,000 volunteers across the country. They have already completed training more than 55,000 volunteers. He said that by receiving training, volunteers are playing an important role in serving humanity as proud volunteer members of the Fire Service and Civil Defense family. And through this, the manpower crisis of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department is being eliminated and the institutional capacity is increasing.
The Home Affairs Advisor said that it is difficult for members of the government forces to deal with disasters such as earthquakes, major fires, floods, etc. alone. In this case, volunteers work together with professional forces and play a very important role in disaster mitigation. He said that there is no alternative to training to make them skilled and competent in any subject. Volunteers at all levels and their necessary preparation and training are very important, especially in dealing with disasters like earthquakes.
Responding to a question from journalists regarding whether the Police Commission Ordinance will be free from politics, the advisor said, laws are made to provide services to the people. This law has also been made so that the people get real services. He said, the Police Commission will make some recommendations for the real welfare of the people and the police. And the Ministry of Home Affairs will implement it.
Earlier, the advisor watched the exercises performed by volunteers at the training ground of Purbachal Fire Service and Civil Defense.
