First batch of lawyers’ training program concludes in Dhaka

Diplomatic Desk:

The first batch of the internship program jointly run by the Embassy of Sweden, Attorney General’s Office of Bangladesh and the United Nations Development Programme has concluded. The new batch of interns was also welcomed.

25 talented law students have successfully completed their six-month training under the program. The internship provides young lawyers with an opportunity to work on real cases, where they gain first-hand experience of how the law impacts policy-making and the application of the law in the daily functioning of the government.

Ambassador of Sweden Nicolas Weeks was present as the special guest at the event. In his speech, he said that protecting the independence and effectiveness of the judiciary is the responsibility of everyone – both those preparing to enter the legal profession and those involved in policy-making.

He congratulated the first batch of interns on their successful completion and urged the new batch to make the most of this opportunity.

This is the first such initiative in Bangladesh, which aims to create an effective link between higher education and the public sector. Sweden has been supporting the initiative since its inception and is working as a partner with the Bangladesh government to build a strong and independent judiciary.

This initiative is in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16—Peace, justice and strong institutions.
