Finance Ministry’s ERD delegation meets BGMEA on decarbonization and circular economy

A delegation from the Economic Relations Division (ERD) under the Ministry of Finance paid a courtesy call and held discussions at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) office on September 30. The meeting discussed in detail the progress of Bangladesh’s green manufacturing and preparations for the upcoming COP30 climate conference (November 2025, Belém, Brazil).

The meeting focused on the decarbonization roadmap of the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, the main driver of Bangladesh’s export sector, and Bangladesh’s green building leadership at the global level. It is worth noting that currently, 263 factories in Bangladesh are LEED certified, which sets the record for the largest number of top-rated green garment factories in the world.

At the meeting, BGMEA Vice President Bidya Amrit Khan said, “It is very important to align the initiatives of the Bangladeshi garment industry with the global climate agenda of the upcoming COP30. Our goal is to implement the decarbonization process quickly and accelerate the industry’s transformation towards a circular economy.”

She also said, “Ensuring access to international climate finance mechanisms like the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Green Transformation Fund (GTF) will further accelerate the low-carbon transition of the sector. At the same time, it will help the Bangladeshi garment industry to innovate, enter new markets and open new horizons of stability.”

The delegates present at the meeting appreciated the role of BGMEA in promoting eco-friendly initiatives and reducing carbon emissions in the Bangladeshi ready-made garment industry and exchanged views on future strategies for climate adaptation and sustainable industrialization through public-private partnerships.
