Development is not possible without education reform in the age of AI: Bobby Hajjaj

Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) Chairman Bobby Hajjaj has said that rapid and deep reforms in Bangladesh’s education system are essential to survive in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

He said these things at a panel discussion titled “Education of Bangladesh: in the age of Artificial Intelligence” organized by the Youth Council of Bangladesh at the Amari Hotel in Gulshan on Sunday (December 21, 2025).

Bobby Hajjaj said, “Bangladesh’s economy has progressed, but the education system has not been able to progress at that pace. The country’s long-term development depends on education reform, skill development and especially the empowerment of teachers.”

He said that teachers must be at the core of education reform. “It is not possible to reap the benefits of artificial intelligence unless the dignity, fair salary and regular training of teachers are ensured. In the AI era, only teachers can guide students in the ethical and correct use of technology.”

Speaking at the panel discussion, he highlighted his nearly two decades of academic and policy experience on education and artificial intelligence. At the same time, he said that a book focusing on education policy is in the works, the Bengali translation of which is likely to be published in January.

He also said, “Bangladesh’s greatest asset is our human resources. But even after 54 years of independence, we have not been able to create skilled and value-added human resources. We are still mainly exporting low-skilled labor, which is limiting our opportunities in the international labor market.”

Bobby Hajjaj believes that artificial intelligence should not be feared and should be effectively integrated into education. “Just as the type of examination has changed after the advent of calculators, so too should the teaching and assessment methods change after the advent of AI. For this, teacher training is most important.”

He said that the country’s education system has stagnated due to centralization. “It is not realistic to control everything from the center in a country of 200 million with thousands of educational institutions. Without structural reforms, the development of the education system with AI is not possible.”

The panel discussion also included Dr. Mahdi Amin, Advisor, Acting Chairman, BNP; Shahir Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Shikho; Shafqat Rabbi, columnist, banker and educationist, founder, Centrist Nation.
