The government has undertaken a mega project to upgrade all upazila health complexes to 101 beds. The work on its modern design and feasibility study is progressing rapidly, said State Minister for Health Dr. MA Muhith.
He gave this information while speaking as the chief guest at a view-sharing meeting organized at the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) auditorium on Saturday (August 1, 2026) afternoon. Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain also spoke at the meeting.
The State Minister for Health said that 75 percent of the country’s people live in villages and their primary reliance is the upazila health complexes. The majority of the services that were previously available at the district level will now be brought to the 101-bed upazila health complexes.
In addition, the target has been set to increase the health sector budget from 1 percent of GDP to 5 percent within the next five years, said international public health and ophthalmologist Dr. Muhith.
He said that initiatives have been taken to establish five new children’s hospitals and separate institutes for women’s health in five cities of the country for specialized services for children. In addition, urban healthcare is being restructured by bringing it under the main structure of the Ministry of Health instead of the City Corporation.
Highlighting the irregularities of the past, State Minister for Health Dr. Muhith said, “Equipment worth hundreds of crores of taka has been purchased without planning, which is lying unused in many places. This wastage will be stopped through a comprehensive plan.”
He also said that 10 Ansar members have been deployed in each Upazila Health Complex as a preliminary step for the safety of doctors.
