Current government working to build a technology-based smart Bangladesh: ICT Minister

The current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working to build a modern, technology-based and smart Bangladesh.

The minister said this during a meeting of a delegation of leading Chinese technology and telecommunications companies led by Yao Wen with Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam at the office of the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications at the Secretariat today (May 11, 2026).

The minister praised China’s long-standing cooperation in Bangladesh’s digital progress and said that Chinese institutions are making important contributions to the development of the country’s telecommunications and ICT infrastructure.

The minister expressed interest in setting up an AI training center in Bangladesh and said that young people will be trained there in modern technology and AI. Through this, the country’s youth will be able to prove their capabilities as part of the information technology revolution.

Fakir Mahbub Anam further said that Bangladesh has always believed in multilateral cooperation, technological development and expansion of digital connectivity. He expressed hope that the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and China will be further strengthened in the future and new horizons will be opened for the welfare of the people of the two countries.

The Chinese ambassador said that for the last three to four decades, China’s top technology companies have been successfully operating in Bangladesh. Currently, the investment amount of Chinese companies in Bangladesh is more than 1.5 billion US dollars and with their technical assistance, about 98 percent of the country’s population has come under the mobile network facilities. In addition, more than 10,000 employment opportunities have been created through this investment.

The ambassador further said that mobile phone manufacturing factories have been established in Bangladesh with the cooperation of Chinese companies and more than 8 million mobile devices are being marketed every year. Chinese companies have also played an important role in the development of the national ICT network, the construction of national data centers and the implementation of digital connectivity projects.

The meeting expressed interest in working jointly to develop the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector in Bangladesh. In addition, discussions were held on increasing mutual cooperation in the future expansion of 5G networks, development of digital infrastructure and technology transfer.

The meeting sought Bangladesh’s cooperation in various international initiatives related to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), especially the hosting of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27) in Shanghai and China’s candidacy for the ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board.

Bilkis Jahan Rimi, Secretary of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, Zhang Pengfei, Third Secretary of the Embassy, ​​Bai Zhaoshi, Ma Ben of Huawei and Mao Yongjun of ZTE were present during the meeting.
