Commerce Minister calls for strengthening Bangladesh-China partnership in green technology-based textile industry

Desk Report:

Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that China’s investment, technology and innovation cooperation are very important to make Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry more sustainable, environmentally friendly and technology-based.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 2nd Bangladesh China Green Textile Expo 2026 held in the capital on Thursday (May 14, 2026).

Khandaker Muktadir said that China’s experience in industrialization, technology development and poverty alleviation is very valuable for Bangladesh. He called on Chinese investors to make meaningful investments in Bangladesh, so that a ‘win-win’ situation is created for both countries.

The minister said that China is Bangladesh’s largest trading partner. There is a need to increase Chinese direct investment to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries. He called for Chinese investment in the revival of closed state-owned mills, modernization of the jute sector, renewable energy and green industrialization.

He also said that Bangladesh currently has the largest number of green certified garment factories in the world, which is a shining example of the environmental awareness of the country’s entrepreneurs. The textile industry must be made more competitive and sustainable by ensuring efficient use of water, electricity and energy.

The minister expressed hope that such an exhibition organized by a joint initiative of Bangladesh and China will open new horizons for technology exchange, investment expansion and sustainable industrialization.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen spoke as a special guest at the event.

Also present were Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Industry (BGMEA) Director Shah Rayid Chowdhury, Bangladesh-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) President Mohammad Khorshed Alam, Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA) President Abdul Hamid Pintu, Saver International Limited Managing Director Md. Faizul Alam, Chinese Enterprise in Bangladesh President Han Kun, and Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh Vice President Lisa Lu.

Later, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir visited various stalls of the expo.

It is worth noting that renowned textile and garment companies, investors, technical experts and business delegations from Bangladesh and China are participating in this most specialized international exhibition of the green textile industry. The exhibition will feature demonstrations of eco-friendly and recyclable textile technologies, seminars and panel discussions by top entrepreneurs from China and Bangladesh.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 10 am to 7 pm daily. The three-day exhibition will conclude on May 16.
