Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a courtesy call on Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin.
The meeting was held at the Trade Advisor’s office at the Secretariat today, Thursday (February 27).
During the meeting, they discussed in detail the development of bilateral relations and the increase in trade and investment.
The Trade Advisor said that China is one of the development partners and friends of Bangladesh. There is an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations through increased investment. At this time, he called for increasing Chinese investment in agriculture, transportation, agro-machinery and healthcare sectors in Bangladesh.
The Trade Advisor said that China has a large trade gap with Bangladesh. He called for increasing imports of goods from Bangladesh and reducing all types of tariffs on imported goods to reduce the trade gap.
Referring to the need for Chinese investment in Bangladesh, the Commerce Advisor said that investment in setting up truck manufacturing factories and modernizing agriculture in this country will bring good results for both countries.
The Chinese ambassador said that Chinese investors are interested in investing in Bangladesh. 30 Chinese companies have shown interest in investing in the Chittagong Economic Zone.
Yao Wen said that there is a huge demand for Bangladeshi hilsa fish in China. Bangladesh has an opportunity to reduce the trade gap through hilsa fish exports. At this time, he initially expressed interest in importing 1,000 metric tons of hilsa. He also mentioned that he wants to import mango, jackfruit and guava from this country and increase investment in these sectors in Bangladesh.
