Chief Advisor orders formation of committee to investigate role of those involved in organizing three controversial national elections

Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed the concerned officials to immediately form a committee to investigate the role of former Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners and Secretaries of the Election Commission Secretariat involved in organizing three controversial national elections.

Chief Advisor and Commission Chief Professor Muhammad Yunus gave this order after a discussion in this regard at a meeting of the National Consensus Commission at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday (16 June 2025).

The meeting was attended by Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission Professor Ali Riaz, members Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain and Dr. Mohammad Ayub Mia. Among others, Principal Secretary to the Chief Advisor Siraj Uddin Mia and Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Monir Haider were present.

In the meeting, the commission members informed the chief advisor about the progress of the work on preparing the July Charter. Vice-Chairman of the commission, Professor Ali Riaz, said, “There has been consensus on several issues. Very soon, it will be possible to finalize the charter based on discussions with all political parties.”

The chief advisor said, “Everyone is eagerly waiting for the July Charter. I hope we will be able to present it to the nation by next July.”

The chief advisor recounted his experience of his visit to London at the meeting and said, “Everyone from the Bangladeshi community I met in London wanted to know about the reforms. Bangladeshi students are very interested. They discussed the work of the Consensus Commission with me in detail and gave their opinions. Wherever I have gone, the expatriate Bangladeshis there are asking me, ‘Will we be able to vote in the next elections?’ We must make every effort to ensure the voting rights of our expatriates. Postal ballots and other options need to be considered and discussed with those concerned.’

At the meeting, Election Commission Reform Commission chief Badiul Alam Majumder said, ‘All politicians have agreed that the role of officials in organizing the past three controversial elections needs to be investigated and held accountable.’
