Bodies of Rayerbazar mass grave to be identified through DNA test – Home Affairs Advisor

The bodies of the July Uprising martyrs in the Rayerbazar mass grave will be identified through DNA test, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said.

The advisor made this statement while briefing journalists after visiting the mass grave of the July Uprising martyrs in the capital’s Rayerbazar on Saturday (August 2, 2025) afternoon.

The advisor said that after identifying the bodies through DNA test, the families of the martyrs can bury them in their respective villages if they want. He said that the bodies of 114 people who were martyred in the July Uprising have been buried in the Rayerbazar mass grave.

Expressing anger over the quality of the construction work of the July martyrs’ mass grave, the advisor said that corruption is the biggest problem in our country. Nothing will be fixed if corruption is not reduced. He said, the quality of bricks is not good even in the graves of martyrs he saw. The advisor instructed the concerned executive engineer of public works present there to ensure the quality of the work by replacing the low-quality bricks with good quality bricks. The executive engineer assured all-out efforts to ensure the quality of the work, including changing the contractor.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, since the DNA test of the bodies of the mass graves will be done, the bodies will be autopsied. This will be done through a committee where doctors will also be present. The members of the committee will be able to tell in detail in what process it will be done.

In response to a question from journalists about the lack of postmortem or autopsy, the advisor said, many people were martyred in the July uprising. Many cases are under trial. The trial of some cases has started. The process of these cases has also started. They will be brought to justice as soon as possible.

The advisor later visited the barracks of the Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBN)-2 and the headquarters of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2 in Mohammadpur, the capital.
