BGMEA Launches ESG Platform for the Apparel Industry

Desk Report:

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has launched an ‘ESG Platform’—or ESG dashboard—to enhance the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry in the global market, ensure compliance with environmental and social standards, and promote good governance. So far, 326 factories have submitted data to this platform. To ensure industry transparency and sustainable development, the association plans to make data submission mandatory for all member factories in the near future.

The platform was officially inaugurated on Monday (October 19) at an event held in the Nurul Quader Auditorium at the BGMEA Complex in the capital.

Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Advisor for Finance and Planning, attended the event as the chief guest. The program was presided over by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan.

‘ESG’ refers to standards related to Environmental, Social, and Governance criteria. As global buyer demands evolve and the importance of eco-friendly production and responsible business practices grows, meeting these standards has become increasingly critical for Bangladesh’s apparel sector.

Speaking at the event, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan stated that to navigate the shifting demands of the global market and address future challenges in building a sustainable apparel industry, factories must become more compliant and data-driven. This platform, initiated by the BGMEA, will play a vital role in evaluating and improving the environmental, social, and governance-related practices of member factories.

He noted that while 326 factories have already provided data, this number is insufficient relative to the industry’s overall requirements. Consequently, there are plans to make data submission mandatory for all member factories soon. If necessary, the BGMEA and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will work together to implement this initiative.

In his remarks as the chief guest, the Advisor for Finance and Planning, Dr. … Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir stated that the government has provided $4.12 billion in subsidies to the energy sector over the past eight months. He further noted that, due to a lack of effective measures by the previous administration, approximately 8 million people have fallen below the poverty line.

He explained that the government is currently addressing three major challenges: a fragile economy inherited from the past, inflationary pressure, and a lack of employment opportunities for educated youth.

The government’s objective is to build a capable and healthy Bangladesh by boosting investment in the manufacturing sector to create jobs, mobilizing domestic resources without increasing tax rates, and raising public expenditure on education and healthcare.

The advisor added that there is a strong possibility for Bangladesh to graduate from the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) by 2029. He noted that effective implementation of social protection programs, such as the ‘family card’ scheme, could significantly reduce poverty.

Speaking as a special guest, Christian Brix Møller, the Ambassador of Denmark to Bangladesh, expressed his support for the country’s economic reform initiatives. He emphasized the importance of national unity, reconstruction, and the transition process in achieving the goal of building a one-trillion-dollar economy.

To reach this objective, the Danish Ambassador highlighted the necessity of establishing an effective parliamentary democratic state through the implementation of the ‘July Charter.’

Dr. M. Masrur Reaz, Chairman and CEO of Policy Exchange Bangladesh, remarked that the ready-made garment (RMG) industry serves as a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s economy. He argued that, for the sake of sustainable development, the industry must move beyond conventional compliance frameworks toward broader sustainability goals.

He emphasized that a robust export base is essential for Bangladesh to meet its development targets. Furthermore, he noted that if ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) data can be effectively translated into actionable decisions and initiatives, it will facilitate long-term success for the industry.

Professor Munshi Sulaiman, Research Director at the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) at BRAC University, underscored the importance of bringing all member factories of the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) under this platform. Also present at the event were BGMEA Senior Vice President Inamul Haq Khan, Vice President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Director Nafis Ud Doula, and other leaders of the organization.

The Embassy of Denmark in Bangladesh provided financial support for the implementation of the ESG platform, an initiative launched by the BGMEA. Technical assistance for the platform was provided by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) and Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB).

According to stakeholders, this platform will facilitate a more systematic evaluation of garment factories’ environmental and social practices, as well as their governance standards. Furthermore, the initiative could help build trust among international buyers, strengthen responsible production systems, and enhance the long-term competitiveness of Bangladesh’s garment industry in the global market.
