BGMEA holds meeting on countering US 20% tariff and sustainable development

On Wednesday (September 3, 2025), an important meeting was held at the Uttara BGMEA Complex in the capital on the future of the garment industry. Representatives of more than 40 international brands and top leaders of BGMEA participated in the meeting.

The main objective of the meeting was to formulate a partnership strategy in the garment industry, ensure sustainable development in the production and supply chain, and maintain Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the international market.

The discussion raised various important issues including strategies to counter the 20% tariff imposed by the US, introduction of a Unified Code of Conduct, product diversification, labor reforms, use of renewable energy, Bangladesh’s preparation for LDC graduation, and challenges of GSP Plus benefits.

Vice-presidents, directors, and chairmen of various committees were present at the meeting led by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan. Representatives of international brands emphasized joint initiatives to make Bangladesh’s apparel sector more competitive and sustainable.
