BGMEA Election: Forum Announces Mahmud Hasan as Panel Leader

The election-focused alliance ‘Forum’ has commenced preparations for the upcoming election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The group has announced Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, Managing Director of Rising Fashions, as its panel leader for this election. Known for adhering to the principles of “service, integrity, courage, and prosperity,” Forum has consistently maintained its commitment to these values. Mahmud Hasan has previously served as a BGMEA vice-president and director. He has also held directorial positions in BTMA and BKMEA, contributing significantly to the garment sector.

On Wednesday (20 November, 2024) Forum leaders introduced their new panel leader to garment industry entrepreneurs at an event held at the Radisson Hotel in Dhaka. Prominent figures, including former BGMEA presidents Anisur Rahman Sinha, Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez, and Dr. Rubana Huq, as well as Forum President MA Salam and General Secretary Dr. Rashid Ahmed Hossaini, attended the event.

During the program, Forum leaders reflected on past electoral setbacks. Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury alleged that their team faced deliberate losses in previous elections.

Former BGMEA president and Forum leader Dr. Rubana Huq emphasized that BGMEA is a non-political platform that requires constructive discussions. She warned that internal conflicts are harming the organization, which in turn negatively affects buyers’ perceptions.

In his speech, newly-appointed panel leader Mahmud Hasan Khan reiterated Forum’s unwavering adherence to its principles. He pledged to oppose irregularities and stressed the importance of preparing an accurate voter list. Mahmud Hasan also stated that he aims to foster improved labor-management relations to avoid labor unrest.

Speaking to journalists, Mahmud Hasan underlined the importance of holding elections within the stipulated time frame. He demanded that only legitimate entrepreneurs and association members be included in the voter list, urging the administration to ensure a fair and credible election process.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Commerce dissolved the BGMEA Board of Directors on October 20, citing multiple allegations. An administrator has been appointed to organize impartial elections within 120 days and hand over responsibilities to the new board.
