BGMEA Director Mohammed Sohel Calls for Accelerated Clean Energy Adoption in Garment Sector

BGMEA Director Mohammed Sohel attended the Bangladesh Clean Energy Week 2025 as Guest of Honour in Dhaka on Tuesday (23 September, 2025).

In his keynote address, Sohel emphasised that clean energy is not just an environmental choice but an economic necessity for Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector. Highlighting Bangladesh’s global leadership in sustainability, he noted that the country now boasts 263 LEED-certified green factories — the highest number in the world.

Building on this achievement, BGMEA has set ambitious targets for the sector: a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, 20% use of renewable energy, and 50% enhanced circularity.

To realise these goals, Sohel urged the government and stakeholders to introduce enabling policies, such as solar parks through public-private partnerships, low-interest financing, and clear frameworks for renewable adoption in the garment industry.

He added that by accelerating clean energy and efficiency, Bangladesh can not only meet global buyers’ demand for sustainable supply chains but also secure its position as the world’s most competitive and resilient garment manufacturing hub.
