Bangladesh and UNESCO to work together to strengthen media freedom and security

Diplomatic Desk:

A delegation from UNESCO Dhaka paid a courtesy call on the Minister and State Minister of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with the aim of strengthening cooperation in media freedom, security and professional development in Bangladesh.

In the meeting, the UNESCO delegation discussed various media-related issues with the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Zahir Uddin Swapan and State Minister, Mr. Yaser Khan Chowdhury.

UNESCO said that it is working to ensure the safety of journalists and especially to enhance the skills of women journalists. These initiatives are playing an important role in freedom of expression and media development as part of the organization’s global activities.

The meeting also exchanged views on the changing media environment in Bangladesh, the current state of information flows and emerging challenges. During the meeting, the potential for mutual cooperation in strengthening professional journalism, developing media and information literacy, and ensuring the accuracy of information was highlighted.

In addition, the importance of building an inclusive and tolerant media system and the importance of transparency and participatory approaches in media management also gained importance in the discussion.

In the meeting, both sides agreed to continue regular dialogue and partnership in the future to build an independent, safe and trustworthy information environment in Bangladesh.

The delegation was attended by the Head and Representative of UNESCO in Bangladesh Dr. Susan Bize, Head of the Communication and Information Department Farhana Shahnaz, Head of the Science Department Khalid Bin Masud, and Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Mahbuba Farzana.
