All efforts have been made to increase the enthusiasm of the police – Home Affairs Advisor

All efforts have been made to increase the enthusiasm of the police, said Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.).

The advisor made this statement while briefing reporters after visiting the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj and inaugurating the prison’s emergency service (hotline) on Sunday (January 26, 2025) morning.

The advisor said that there is no shortage of manpower in the police. After the July Revolution, their enthusiasm for work had declined somewhat due to various reasons. Therefore, all efforts have been made by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Headquarters to increase the speed and enthusiasm of the police.

Regarding the launch of the prison emergency service (hotline) number “09612021690”, Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said, from now on, the location of the prisoner, information related to release on parole, physical condition, attendance, interview and speaking dates will be known through this emergency hotline number. The relatives of the prisoner can call this hotline number and get all the information. The advisor said, students injured in the movement will be appointed to this emergency service and employment arrangements will be made.

The advisor also said, among the prisoners who escaped from prison in the face of the July-August mass uprising, 700 accused are still absconding. They have not been caught yet. And the rest of the absconding have been arrested and kept in prison. In response to a question from journalists, he said, I do not deny that robbery and extortion are happening. However, those who are doing all these things are also being caught. We are trying to reduce extortion and extortion in any way.

The advisor inspected various facilities inside Dhaka Central Jail, including the prison hospital, library, divisional prisoners’ building, prisoners’ and detainees’ building, prison meditation center, physical exercise center, central prison maktab, handicraft production center, cook house, gallows, computer training center, book distribution center, visitor meeting building, prison canteen. During the inspection, he planted saplings of medicinal trees and green plants inside the prison. Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motahar Hossain was present at the time.

Later, the advisor inspected the central packing house located in Shyampur under the Ministry of Agriculture.

Briefing reporters after the inspection, the advisor said that the work of the central packing house project was supposed to be completed in June this year. But it seems that it will not be completed within the stipulated time due to various reasons. That is why I have urged those involved in the project. He said, “The biggest problem in our country is corruption. And in the case of projects, the source of corruption is extending the project duration and budget.” He also said, “As long as I am in charge, the budget of this project will not be increased even a single penny. However, if necessary, the time can be extended.”
