Algeria Extends Support to Bangladesh in LNG/LPG Imports and Energy Investment

Diplomatic Desk:

New opportunities have emerged for Bangladesh to collaborate with Algeria—not only through the import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and other petroleum products, but also by jointly engaging in energy infrastructure development and the exploration of coal and gas fields. Both Bangladesh and Algeria have expressed interest in expanding this cooperation through a government-to-government (G2G) framework.

To this end, a bilateral meeting was held on Thursday (October 22, 2026) in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, between Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Humayun Kabir, and Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. The discussions covered various bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues of mutual interest.

The meeting placed special emphasis on expanding cooperation across several sectors, including energy, fertilizers, agriculture, textiles, trade, education, and the promotion of people-to-people ties. The two ministers also explored ways to enhance bilateral trade and investment.

State Minister Humayun Kabir expressed satisfaction over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bangladesh and Algeria regarding cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector. He noted that this agreement has opened doors to new possibilities for energy-related collaboration between the two nations.

Under this MoU, a framework for G2G imports of LNG, LPG, and other petroleum products from Algeria could be established. Furthermore, there is potential for joint initiatives in developing oil refineries and LNG infrastructure in Bangladesh, as well as in the exploration of coal and gas reserves.

Additionally, the Algerian Petroleum Institute has expressed interest in providing training and knowledge-sharing programs for Bangladeshi engineers and technical experts in the energy sector. This initiative will create opportunities to develop a skilled workforce and enhance capacity within Bangladesh’s energy sector. Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated that the President of Algeria had issued immediate instructions to prioritize the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), taking into account Bangladesh’s energy requirements.

When the need for fertilizer imports to meet the demands of Bangladesh’s agricultural sector was highlighted, the Algerian Foreign Minister expressed an interest in cooperating with Bangladesh in this area. He also indicated an interest in leveraging Bangladesh’s experience and expertise to help revitalize Algeria’s textile industry.

Furthermore, discussions were held on expanding cooperation between the two nations in the pharmaceutical, leather, and textile sectors.

During the meeting, the importance of holding regular Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between the foreign ministries of the two countries was emphasized. It was noted that the next round of these consultations would take place in Dhaka soon.

Both ministers also underscored the significance of exchanging high-level visits to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Algeria.

The meeting, which took place in a friendly and cordial atmosphere, is expected to play a vital role in bolstering bilateral ties, expanding trade and investment, and creating new opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including energy security.
