Diplomatic Desk:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting with Kazuhiko Amakawa, Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The discussion focused on increasing investment and strengthening economic cooperation in Bangladesh’s energy, information and communication technology (ICT), and infrastructure sectors.

The meeting took place on Wednesday (October 28, 2026) at 9:30 AM (Japan Standard Time).

During the meeting, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed his gratitude for JBIC’s role in Bangladesh’s economic development and its contributions to various sectors. He noted that the government of Bangladesh has taken initiatives to reform and simplify regulations, alongside ensuring a business-friendly environment to attract both domestic and foreign investment.

The Prime Minister further emphasized his government’s commitment to formulating investment-friendly policies and improving the overall business climate. He highlighted that the government is actively pursuing various initiatives to expand investment opportunities, enhance international economic cooperation, and accelerate development activities.

He pointed out that JBIC’s priority projects align with the development agenda of the current government of Bangladesh, creating significant scope for further collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

A request was made to establish a JBIC office in Bangladesh. In response, JBIC Governor Kazuhiko Amakawa indicated that the proposal would be considered with due seriousness.

The establishment of a JBIC office in Bangladesh could play a positive role in strengthening communication and coordination regarding investments, identifying potential projects, and fostering greater collaboration with Japanese investors.

This meeting is expected to create new opportunities to deepen the economic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan, while also enhancing the prospects for Japanese investment and financing in key development sectors within the country.
