Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the ‘July Uprising Memorial Museum’ built in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital to preserve the memory of the July Uprising, considered an important chapter in the history of Bangladesh’s anti-fascist democratic struggle, and to convey it to future generations.
The Prime Minister formally inaugurated the museum by unveiling a memorial plaque on Wednesday (August 5, 2026) morning. Later, Fateha reading, prayers and prayers were held.
After the inauguration, the Prime Minister visited various galleries and exhibitions of the museum. During this time, she toured the preserved artifacts, photographs, documents, memorials, videos and other historical materials on the memory of the July Uprising, the sacrifice of the martyrs, the important events of the mass movement and the torture and repression during the then Awami League government.
Former Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and the Prime Minister’s daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, were present at the event.
At that time, a documentary based on the history of the July Uprising, the participation of the masses and the victory of the movement was screened.
Later, in his speech as the chief guest at the discussion titled ‘July 36’, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that the ‘July Uprising Memorial Museum’ is a historic initiative to permanently capture the struggle, sacrifice, pain, courage and democratic aspirations of the people in the national memory. He expressed the hope that this museum will not only highlight the events of the July 2024 Uprising, but also its relationship with the overall democratic journey of the people of Bangladesh before future generations.
The Prime Minister said that history testifies that the ousted fascist clique could never accept democratic governance in the country. He said that their predecessors had laid the foundation stone of democracy in the country by amending the constitution in 1975. Later, the martyred President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence, re-established multi-party democracy in the country after assuming the responsibility of running the state. He commented that future generations would benefit if these historical events were also properly preserved in museums.
He said that it is very important to preserve history in a truthful, impartial and credible manner. For this, the Prime Minister emphasized on preserving the identities, life stories of the martyrs, testimonies of the injured, experiences of participants in the mass uprising, photographs, documents, videos, artworks and other historical materials, so that domestic and foreign researchers and future generations can know about the real history of the democratic struggle in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister also said that the trial of every crime committed in the anti-fascist movement will be carried out in a transparent, impartial and credible manner following the due process of law. At the same time, the government is working to build a self-reliant, prosperous, safe and democratic Bangladesh as desired by the martyrs by preserving the memory of the martyrs, ensuring the treatment and welfare of the injured July warriors.
Expressing gratitude to the Bangladesh Army for standing by the people during the mass uprising and expressing deep condolences to the families of the martyrs, the Prime Minister said, “Bangladesh will never again become a vassal state.”
After the discussion meeting, the Prime Minister enjoyed a cultural program performed by renowned artists of the country.
