Teesta Barrage Master Plan will be implemented at any cost: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the Teesta Barrage Master Plan will be implemented at any cost in the interest of ensuring the country’s water security, supporting agriculture and improving the livelihoods of the people of the northern region.

He said this while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament on Monday (June 29, 2026) afternoon.

The Prime Minister said, “The Teesta Barrage Master Plan is a national priority. This project will be implemented at any cost to ensure the country’s water security, support agriculture and improve the livelihoods of the people of the northern region.”

He said that the government is committed to solving the country’s long-standing water management problems. To this end, massive investments are being made in the development of rivers, canals and irrigation infrastructure.

Tarique Rahman further said, “Water is one of the biggest concerns of the people of Rajshahi and Rangpur regions in particular. Members of parliament regularly raise various issues related to the Padma and Teesta rivers. We are working hard to resolve these issues.”

The Prime Minister said that the government’s goal is not just to build infrastructure; rather, it is to increase agricultural production through integrated water management, address the impacts of climate change, and ensure sustainable development of the quality of life of the people of the northern region.

She expressed hope that if the Teesta Barrage Master Plan is implemented, there will be positive changes in the expansion of irrigation facilities, water conservation, and overall economic activities in the northern region of the country.
