Industry, Commerce and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir made a surprise visit to the leather sales center in Amin Bazar, Dhaka, on Thursday (May 28). Secretary (Routine Duty) of the Ministry of Commerce Md. Abdur Rahim Khan was present at the time.
The visit was aimed at observing on-site whether the collection, storage and marketing activities of sacrificial animal skins are being conducted properly. During the visit, the minister spoke to buyers and sellers of raw leather, shopkeepers and traders and inquired about the market situation, prices, storage arrangements and overall activities.
At the time, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that the government is working with utmost importance to ensure proper management of leather during the sacrificial season. Stating that the leather industry is an important sector of the country’s economy, he urged all concerned to work responsibly.
The minister also said that the government is vigilant to ensure that there is no mismanagement, syndicate or waste of leather, and regular monitoring activities will continue at the field level.
