Public awareness is essential to combat cybercrime: Deputy Speaker

Desk Report:

On Wednesday (May 6, 2026), a delegation led by UNESCO Head of Office and Country Representative Dr. Suzanne Vaiz paid a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP, at his office in the Parliament Building.

During the meeting, the Deputy Speaker said that freedom of expression is recognized as a fundamental right in the Constitution of Bangladesh. However, deliberately spreading misinformation (misinformation/disinformation) through social media to create chaos in the society is not included in the freedom of expression. He stressed the importance of organizing training for members of parliament and relevant stakeholders in this regard.

He also said that children in Bangladesh are benefiting greatly from UNESCO’s education, culture and information technology activities. It is important to make the public aware of laws related to cybercrime and cybersecurity.

The UNESCO delegation said they will work together to develop media, verify facts, improve the professional standards of journalism and increase citizens’ access to information.

During the meeting, various bilateral cooperation issues including education, information technology, artificial intelligence and cyber security were discussed.

Members of the UNESCO delegation and relevant officials of the National Parliament Secretariat were present at the meeting.
