JICA signs loan agreements for Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project and Chattogram Sewerage System Development Project

On 25 November 2024, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inked two loan agreements amounting to JPY 39,902 million (Approx. BDT 3,147 Crore) with the Government of Bangladesh), at a signing ceremony held at the Economic Relations Division. The loan agreements were signed for the 3rd Tranche of the Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project (38,206 million JPY) and Chattogram Sewerage System Development Project (Engineering Service) (1,696 million JPY).

In the ceremony, The Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office expressed: “Today we have agreed to implement 2 two different types of projects. However, the objective of the 2 projects is one, which is to support people of Bangladesh to advance forward for prosperous, inclusive and sustainable development. I hope our contribution will help our dear colleagues of Bangladesh Government who are working very hard to create a better Bangladesh.”

The Jamuna Railway Bridge is expected to come into operation in early 2025 and will boost rail connectivity between the eastern and western zone of Bangladesh. The Chattogram Sewerage System Development Project will significantly benefit the people of Chattogram by improving sanitation and enhancing public health, making the city a more livable place for all its residents.
