Improving law and order situation and controlling corruption will be the government’s top priorities: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in his first address to the nation

Desk Report:

In his first address to the nation as Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman announced the restoration of democracy, ensuring the rule of law and a tough stance against corruption. The speech, delivered on Wednesday night, was broadcast live by state broadcaster Bangladesh Television (BTV). At the beginning of the speech, he thanked the Almighty Allah and paid deep respect to the sacrifices of the martyrs.

The Prime Minister said that the new government formed by the people’s vote has started its journey amidst a fragile economy, weak governance structure and deteriorating law and order situation. Improving law and order situation and controlling corruption will be the government’s top priorities. He identified the spread of gambling and drugs as one of the reasons for the deterioration of law and order and announced that strict steps will be taken. He clarified that the rule of law, not party influence, will be the main basis for running the state.

Greeting the countrymen on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, the Prime Minister urged traders to keep prices affordable. He promised to bring stability to the market by avoiding excessive profits and breaking syndicates. He also said that the authorities concerned have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted gas, water and electricity supply to the fasting people during Sehri, Iftar and Tarawih.

As part of setting an example of restraint in government expenditure, the Prime Minister highlighted the party’s decision that no member of parliament elected from BNP will import tax-free cars or take plot facilities. He said that the government will be run by following the ideals of fairness and accountability.

The Head of Government also announced initiatives to modernize and simplify the railway communication system to reduce traffic congestion in the capital Dhaka and divisional cities. He highlighted the plan to build a safe and affordable communication system across the country by coordinating the activities of the railway, waterway, road and bridge sectors. At the same time, he emphasized on transforming the young generation into skilled manpower and urged them to acquire skills to survive in the competition in the era of information technology and artificial intelligence.

In the last part of the speech, the Prime Minister said that all citizens, whether they voted for the government or not, have equal rights. The government will be run on this principle, irrespective of party affiliation, religion or caste. He concluded his speech by wishing for the welfare of the country and the nation.
