Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow and grave concern over the casualties among Bangladeshi peacekeepers following a surprise drone attack carried out by terrorists on a United Nations peacekeeping base in the Abyei area of Sudan.
In a condolence statement, the Chief Adviser said he was deeply saddened by the martyrdom of six brave Bangladeshi peacekeepers and the injury of eight others while they were carrying out their noble duty of maintaining peace and stability. He noted that Bangladesh’s significant contribution to UN peacekeeping missions is internationally recognized, and the supreme sacrifice of the fallen peacekeepers is both a source of national pride and profound grief.
He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured peacekeepers.
The Chief Adviser stated that the United Nations has already been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest standard of medical treatment and necessary assistance for the injured personnel. He assured that the government would stand by the families of the peacekeepers during this difficult time.
Strongly condemning the terrorist attack, he said that attacks on peacekeepers constitute a serious crime against international peace and humanity. He urged the United Nations and the international community to take effective steps to further strengthen the safety and security of peacekeepers deployed in conflict zones.
The statement further mentioned that the Government of Bangladesh would continue close coordination with the United Nations to ensure the prompt repatriation of the bodies of the fallen peacekeepers and to guarantee proper medical care for those injured.
