Local Government Department distributed checks worth Tk 7.7 million to the families of martyrs killed in the May 5 Shapla Chattar massacre and the March 2021 protest program

The check distribution ceremony for the families of martyrs who were martyred in the May 5, 2013, Shapla Chattar massacre and the March 2021 protest program was held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Friday, 2025.

The event organized by the Local Government Department was attended by Mr. Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Honorable Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, as the chief guest and Dr. A.F.M. Khalid Hossain, Honorable Advisor to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, as the special guest.

On May 5, 2013, 58 families of those who were martyred in the massacre centered around the Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh rally at Shapla Chattar and on March 2021, 10 lakh taka per family was given a cheque for a total of 7.70 crore taka.

In his speech as the chief guest, Mr. Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Honorable Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, said, “The blood of martyrs never goes in vain. Today’s recognition of the martyrs of the historic Shapla Chattar and the anti-Modi movement is proof of that.”

Stating that the government is proud to recognize the martyr families, the advisor said, so that no one can erase the names of the martyrs of the historic Shapla Chattar from history, the names of the martyrs will be engraved and written on Shapla Chattar itself.

In his speech as the special guest, Advisor for Religious Affairs Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain said, “Providing financial assistance to the martyrs of Shapla Chattar and the anti-Modi movement is a historic initiative of Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud.”

He commented that the process of recognizing two important events has begun through this initiative.

Heartily commending the Ministry of Local Government and Advisor Asif Mahmud for providing financial assistance to the family members of the martyrs who were martyred in the 2013 Shapla Chattar massacre and the 2021 anti-Modi protest program, Ameer of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Maulana Shah Muhibullah Babunagari, said, “The entire Alem Samaj of Bengal has been honored by this great initiative of the Local Government Advisor.”

Secretary of the Local Government Department, Mr. Md. The program, chaired by Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, also included speeches by Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar, AB Party Chairman Mr. Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Manju, Khilafat Majlish Secretary General Maulana Mamunul Haque, People’s Rights Council President Mr. Nurul Haque Nur, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Secretary General Maulana Sajidur Rahman, and Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Mr. Md. Shahjahan Mia.
