Sweden Reaffirms Support for Human Rights and Democracy in Bangladesh

The Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka has reiterated Sweden’s unwavering commitment to promoting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law both globally and in Bangladesh. “When human rights are protected, democracy thrives – and people trust the system,” the Embassy noted.

Since 1995, Sweden has supported the establishment and development of more than 50 National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) worldwide, including in Bangladesh. Under its 2024–2028 Global Development Strategy, Sweden is working to protect global norms and democratic processes, strengthen independent institutions and systems, support organizations and networks defending human rights and freedoms, and stand by people facing discrimination and oppression.

As part of these efforts, Ambassador Nicolas Weeks joined key stakeholders last week in Cox’s Bazar at a consultation on the reform of the National Human Rights Commission Act 2009 – a crucial step toward building a stronger and more accountable NHRC in Bangladesh. “The role of human rights compliance for stability and prosperity is fundamental for any democracy,” Ambassador Weeks emphasized.
