44 public libraries under construction inaugurated by Upazila Parishad

On Thursday (June 19, 2025), at the meeting room of the Council of Ministers Division (Old Building) of the Bangladesh Secretariat, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives of the Interim Government, announced the grand inauguration of 44 public libraries under construction through the Upazila Parishad.

At the inauguration ceremony, the advisor said, ‘The biggest investment in building a developed society is education and knowledge.

Therefore, an initiative has been taken to establish a library in each upazila.’

He said, ‘In the first phase, a total of 23 crore 32 lakh taka has been allocated from the Local Government Department for the construction of public libraries in 44 upazilas of 11 districts, each at a cost of 53 lakh taka.’

Advisor Asif Mahmud called on everyone to join this dream and make knowledge our path to success.

The advisor further said, ‘Measures have been taken to construct quality libraries by taking into consideration the areas (especially North Bengal) where the literacy rate and poverty rate are low.’

Asif Mahmud said that special importance has been given to the construction style, environment and management of the library to attract students and encourage them to practice knowledge.

He thanked the concerned officials of the Local Government Department and the Local Government Engineering Department for this activity of constructing the library, including laying the foundation stone in a short time.

After the program, in response to a question from journalists regarding the selection of upazilas for the construction of the library, the advisor said that instead of political considerations or revenge, arrangements have been made for a balanced distribution of the budget to the deprived areas and that issue has also been given importance in the construction of the library.

In response to another question from journalists regarding the South City Corporation, Asif Mahmud said that the government has shown enough patience and sincerity regarding the closure of the city building. But citizen services have decreased by about 30-40%. Any decision in this regard will be taken collectively by the interim government.

The event was presided over by the Secretary of the Local Government Department, Md. Rezaul Maksud Zahedi. Also present were the Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department, senior officials of the Local Government Department, journalists and other concerned persons.
